20 Mar Dance Arts Treats 2019: Tales Of The Manuvu By Ballet Philippines CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo March 22-31
“Tales of the Manuvu”- The Best of Pop Rock Opera Ballet all set to open on Mar. 22
“Tales of the Manuvu”, an original contemporary Filipino rock opera ballet choreographed by National Artist for Dance and Ballet Philippines’ Artistic Director Alice Reyes in 1977, will be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo from March 22.
As the closing production of Ballet Philippines’ 49th Season, “Tales of the Manuvu” tells the creation story of the Manobotribe from Mindanao.
The Libretto, written by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, was based from an article published in Philippine Heritage by E. Arsenio Manuel. Multi-awarded singer-composer Dero Pedero wrote the musical score, along side rock band “The Afterbirth” which redefined Filipino artistry in dance. The late Philippine couturier Ernest Santiago designed and executed the costumes. Respected CCP artist Monino Duque designed both the sets and the lights respectively.
In the original 1977 world premiere production, OPM artists Celeste Legaspi, Hadji Alejandro, Anthony Castelo, Boy Camara were tapped to essay the leading roles.
Lea Navarro also made her debut performance in this musical together with Rey Paguio and the UP Concert Chorus.
For this new 2019 revival production of “Tales of the Manuvu”, Celeste Legaspi, Boy Camara and Ding Mercado shall reprise their roles with their vocal artistry and style. Joining these musical legends are multi-awarded performers Shiela Valderama, Lorenz Martinez, Nar Cabico, Reuben Laurente, Poppert Bernadas and Lara Maigue. Fresh from the “Miss Saigon” UK Tour, Aicelle Santos will also be in the cast.
Broadway theater designer and multi awarded filmmaker Loy Arcenas will lend his creativ ingenuity with a new mystical Manobo realm in the production and set design.
Noted lighting designer KatschCatoy will bring out the color tones and hues of the stage design. A set of new arrangements by musical composer Francis De Veyra based on the original music and score of Dero Pedero shall add a fresher mood and tone of this musical masterpiece.
The unique adaptation of the ‘creation story’ behind the “Tales of the Manuvu” was the most monumental coup of Ballet Philippines in the 70s. Not only did it bring together rock, opera, pop and ballet on one stage, but it also marked a precedence when audiences from all walks of life trooped to the CCP Main Theater and celebrated the best of Philippine culture.
Alice Reyes recalls, “We opened to a packed house and we never looked back. People sat on both aisles of the theater night after night with long lines outside.”
